My name is Erica Sockwell and I am the 6th Grade Science & Social Studies Teacher and this is my 13th year teaching for Jonesboro Public Schools. Others can say what they want, 6th grade is my favorite!
I am a wife of 24 years, mother to 1 human child and four furry ones. I am also a writer, and an artist and love to infuse those passions into anything I'm doing.
Each year I fall a little more in love with our school!
For the past 6 years I have been selected as a "Teacher of Excellence" by our local Educational Cooperative (Crowley's Ridge Educational Cooperative). That was very exciting, flattering, and humbling! I was offered the opportunity to meet and share with other teachers from all over the area the "Madness of Room 109"! I have presented my knowledge and experiences with local, state, national, and even international conferences and experiences!
Being creative and thinking on their feet are the best things I can teach your child. Pretty much, my entire educational philosophy can be summed up by Mr. Rogers (Yes, THAT Mr. Rogers!)
"As an adult we may think of play as a break from serious learning, but to a child, serious play IS serious learning."
We will be doing some fabulous activities, experiments, and projects this year. From dissecting eyes, hearts, and lungs to building roller coasters down the hallways and even having an epic 'Marshmallow War" I believe that these rich (and believe it or not, educational) experiences will stick with them for the rest of their lives.
Don't forget to follow our class over on Twitter! @STEMShenanigans for all your "Science Shenanigans" needs!
"All we get is one little spark of madness, we mustn't lose it."
