1/23/2019 0 Comments Back to BasicsMy adventures with "Micro-blogging" aren't over but I was missing the depth of character this blog has. So, long story short...I'M BAAAAAAAaaaaaCK! Along with me being back, I have a slew of fantastic pictures to share with you of some wonderful things happening in our STEM Lab and around school. Bear with me as I unload them in the next few posts. Comment on the ones you love, ignore the ones you don't. Ha! This series of pictures really captures the student's favorite challenges. LEGO CHALLENGES! It's definitely just a single facet of what we do and explore in our STEM Lab but it has been a giant hit. It's also the topic I have the most pictures of because when I'm busy playing along with them or facilitating investigations, it never fails that a student interjects, "Hey, Mrs. Sockwell! Take a picture of what I built!" 8/7/2017 0 Comments Scattered!Hello All!
I've gotten into "micro-blogging" more and more this past school year. (As I'm sure you can tell from the date on my last post!) Micro-blogging is basically Twitter for me. That's where you will find real time updates and photos from our activities and adventures. Therefore, if you wish, you may follow my class' Twitter account @SockwellScience to keep a thumb on our goings on :) Whether it's our Mystery Skype conversations all over the globe or the unique presentations, digital and non, my students create; you'll find it just a couple of clicks away! Thanks so much to everyone who reads these posts and, if you enjoy them, please let me know and I'll be more diligent in keeping this more lengthy blog updated. 12/9/2016 0 Comments December 09th, 2016I can't believe that it's once again my favorite time of year! Dissection time! A HUGE Thanks goes out to the Jonesboro Junior Auxillary for taking their time and energy to come and foster the fantastic love of Science and, well, all things gross with my students!
11/17/2016 0 Comments Whew! What a first part of the year! Our school looked like the nursery rhyme "The Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe!" We had so many students we didn't know what to do! Luckily, Mr. Greer did and brought in Mrs. Supinsky to join our 6th grade team. One problem down, but now where to put her? She needed a classroom. She needed books and supplies too. Therefore, I gave up my "Island Paradise" and moved to the Science Lab for at least the remainder of this school year. Who knows what adventures next year may hold! Unfortunately, our blog has suffered a bit but since we just now received a stunning new MacBook cart fully stocked, I believe we can resume our guest blogger quest! Here are just a few pics to catch us up so far. There will be more to come soon! 11/15/2016 0 Comments Science Shenanigans! We have a classroom Twitter account now! I know, I know, it's taken a while to convert me over to the Twitter-sphere but we are here now! Find us at either SockwellScience or ScienceShannanigans!
It's funny how things happen. One moment you're checking your email in a random moment of classroom calm, and the next you're standing in front of a local news camera talking about a school goal. That's how yesterday went. Let me rewind to a few weeks before school was out last year Thumbing through a school supply catalog (in another rare moment of calm) I stumbled upon a bulletin board of the United States. It was white and cardboard and meant for a classroom study. Last year our Technology Facilitator, Kylene Lichucki, had this fantastic idea to Mystery Skype other classrooms around the world! We Skyped England, China, Canada, and several more! Our goal at first was to simply accumulate digital miles. At first it was 20,000 which we met in the first few months. I think we ended up with over 60,000 total miles for the year. So while flipping through this magazine, something occurred to me. I said to myself, "Self, I bet we could Skype each state!" So, with agreement from Mrs. Lichucki, I ordered the bulletin board and assembled it in the main hallway of the school. It doesn't look like much now, but the hope is that whenever a class Skypes with another, when they figure out through questioning where the other class is in the US, they will come and take the state off the bulletin board back to their classrooms and decorate it. Then they will return it. I want this to be a living board. I want this to be interactive. I want the students to look forward to seeing it change and develop and not simply blend into the background. Fast forward to yesterday. I received an email regarding the board and our school's Mystery Skype goal and the next thing I know, the gorgeous Rachel Coulter from KAIT8 News is interviewing me. |
