It's funny how things happen. One moment you're checking your email in a random moment of classroom calm, and the next you're standing in front of a local news camera talking about a school goal. That's how yesterday went. Let me rewind to a few weeks before school was out last year Thumbing through a school supply catalog (in another rare moment of calm) I stumbled upon a bulletin board of the United States. It was white and cardboard and meant for a classroom study. Last year our Technology Facilitator, Kylene Lichucki, had this fantastic idea to Mystery Skype other classrooms around the world! We Skyped England, China, Canada, and several more! Our goal at first was to simply accumulate digital miles. At first it was 20,000 which we met in the first few months. I think we ended up with over 60,000 total miles for the year. So while flipping through this magazine, something occurred to me. I said to myself, "Self, I bet we could Skype each state!" So, with agreement from Mrs. Lichucki, I ordered the bulletin board and assembled it in the main hallway of the school. It doesn't look like much now, but the hope is that whenever a class Skypes with another, when they figure out through questioning where the other class is in the US, they will come and take the state off the bulletin board back to their classrooms and decorate it. Then they will return it. I want this to be a living board. I want this to be interactive. I want the students to look forward to seeing it change and develop and not simply blend into the background. Fast forward to yesterday. I received an email regarding the board and our school's Mystery Skype goal and the next thing I know, the gorgeous Rachel Coulter from KAIT8 News is interviewing me.
